Crowd Packs Railroad Park For March For Our Lives
Railroad Park was a sea of signs sparked by the energy of young people and supporters covered several blocks nearby in the #March4OurLives demonstration Saturday. The event was one of hundreds across the country.
There were about dozen speakers, including the 13-year-old SGA President from Birmingham’s Phillips Academy, Jacoria Johnson. “I believe it’s time for us to come up with our own solutions. We need to show the world we see what is going on. Just like in the civil rights movement, we must fight back,” the bowtie-clad, aspiring lawyer said. “We go to school to get an education to start our life, not to end it.”
Minister Gwen Webb, a foot soldier from Birmingham’s civil rights movement, also spoke. Webb was a freshman in high school when she went to jail. Saturday she said the crowd at the park assured her that her marching was not in vain.
Organizers said they were pleased with the turnout for the event because it shows people care about the message from the movement.
