Be our next Health and Science Reporter!
WBHM, an award-winning public radio station serving Birmingham and the heart of Alabama, seeks an energetic reporter with keen intellectual curiosity to tell engaging stories on-air and online about health and science.
Our Health and Science Reporter examines the research and economics of those disciplines with a focus on telling stories of the people who live here. The candidate will have the reporting and storytelling skills to make WBHM the authoritative source in Alabama on what’s new, interesting, groundbreaking, or heartbreaking on the beat.
The reporter covers topics as varied as climate change to cancer treatment to opioid abuse to programs that train students for STEM careers. Birmingham is home to UAB, among the top-ranked research universities in the U.S., and other public and private science, tech and biomedical organizations. There are sharp public health disparities among socio-economic groups in Alabama. These are all part of the beat.
This position reports to the News Director. While most of the reporter’s time will be spent on the beat, events will sometimes require coverage of general assignments and breaking news across all platforms, as needed. The position will require some evening, weekend, and holiday work, as news and events dictate, and participation in the station’s on-air fundraising drives.
The successful candidate will be part of a collaborative team of journalists working to make a difference and building audiences on-air, online and on social media in one of the South’s most diverse and dynamic cities. Birmingham is home to a thriving restaurant and bar scene, live music festivals, and plenty of green space to explore.
